Keywords & Leo in a Nutshell (including a bit of technical stuff)
Welcome to Leo season, make way for the king (or queen) of the zodiac. This sign, like Aries, is a passionate fire sign and it is ruled by the Sun. As the sun is the center of our solar system, Leos like to be center stage. Leo is a fixed sign, meaning it is associated with the middle of a season (high summer) when things are stable and static. Like Taurus, this can give Leos a dose of stubbornness and immovability in the face of conflict. Leo shares a lot in common with Aries, but the fact that this fire sign is fixed rather than cardinal helps to differentiate between them. Leos are much less impulsive than Aries. Think of it this way, Aries is the spark that lights the fire and Leo is the blazing fire itself. Leo is also represented by the majestic figure of the lion (dare I say, The Lion King and now Mufasa) which provides a visual cue of just how in charge folks with prominent Leo placements tend to be, or at least think that they are.

I will discuss this at greater length later, but if we take a look at the great humanitarian sign of Aquarius which is exactly opposite Leo on the zodiacal wheel, we can get a sense of some of Leo’s flaws. Leo folks can be very egotistical and narcissistic if they aren’t careful. They also tend to be very individualistic and if in positions of power can border on authoritarian or tyrannical. (Note that this is not always the case, it’s really just a word of warning). “Me, me, me! Mine, mine, mine!” can be Leo mantras. Think of the hilariously annoying seagulls squabbling over food in Finding Nemo.

Aquarius helps to balance this out by focusing on the collective, challenging the status quo, and promoting the voices of folks on the margins of society who are often discriminated against and even oppressed. Existing between both extremes, Leo and Aquarius, lies the healthy and balanced ego, and by extension, society. Leo gives voice to the silenced folks on the margins of society (Aquarius). 🙂
Were you born during Leo season (July 22nd – August 22nd)? If not, do you have other prominent Leo placements, besides the Sun, in your chart? Take a look at your Moon, Ascendant/Rising Sign, and Ascendant Ruler (the planet ruling your rising sign). Perhaps you have Scorpio rising and its ruler, Mars, is in Leo in the 10th house. (Don’t worry about the houses for now, though if you want to have a basic understanding of them, take a look at this article. I picked this as an example because the 10th house and Midheaven are associated with career, vocation, your public persona and/or legacy (here’s another article about the 10th house significations) since it is where the sun reaches its peak/highest point/zenith midafternoon before beginning to set).

Don’t know which planets rule which signs? Check out this chart (also captured below) which enumerates planetary rulerships, both ancient and modern:

Positive attributes:
- Cheerful
- Courageous
- Entertaining
Negative attributes (the shadow side of Leo: an overly-inflated ego and all that comes along with that, even as far as behaving like a childish tyrant):
- Conceited & Pompous (not quite the same thing, but they have a lot in common, so I paired them).
- Domineering
- Snobbish

Finally, since this is a blog post series catering to adults I haven’t included any children’s or young adult (a.k.a. teen) authors, but J.K. Rowling (like her magical hero and epic fantasy series Harry Potter) is a Leo: both born on July 31st. Beatrix Potter of Peter Rabbit fame was a Leo as was P.L. Travers, the mind behind Mary Poppins. Since Leos often display a childlike enthusiasm, or on the negative side, can behave rather childishly, I thought it was worth offering a handful of Leo book/author recommendations for kids and/or teens. (Not to exclude adults, like myself, with a healthy inner child). 🙂
6 Fiction Recommendations
| TITLE | Call No./# of Minerva copies | Why is this a Leo read? |
|
Circe (2018) (another Leo writer, born July 24, 1978) |
MIL |
A book about a fierce nymph and witch, Circe, daughter of the sun god, Helios, by a renowned Leo writer known for her feminist mythology retellings. You may have enjoyed her first book, The Song of Achilles, back in Aries season. What makes this book even MORE ideal for Leo season is that Circe has a lioness familiar AND generally leonine associations on the island where she’s been exiled.

|
Diva (2024) |
GOO | The title of this book practically screams, or should I say, operatically sings, Leo. 🙂
This novel is all about renowned Greek-American opera singer, soprano Maria Callas, and her messy tragic life (both on and off stage). If you are intrigued by Callas’ story, check out the recent biographical film all about her starring Angelina Jolie. Unfortunately it’s only available on Netflix. Finally, enjoy the grand finale to this year’s arts-themed Summer Reading programming, an hour of live opera at First Parish Church on Saturday, August 16th. Time TBA. |
|
The Midnight Library (2020) |
HAI | A speculative fiction novel (exploring “what if” questions often with a scifi-type perspective) book about second chances. What if you got to make different choices and live your one precious life differently?
This book explores deeply philosophical and existential questions of identity. This is perfect for Leo season since Leos are very focused on authentic self-expression which requires courage AND the risk of being exiled from mainstream society (the Aquarius side of this polarity), as Leo and Aquarius are opposing signs. Note: while the author is a Cancer (not a Leo) the book was first published during Leo season on August 13, 2020. |
|
Moby Dick (1851, 1998 ed.) (another Leo writer, born August 1, 1819, died in 1891) |
2 Minerva copies (of this edition) | This truly epic literary classic is by a Leo. From a thematic perspective the novel is better suited to Pisces, Cancer or Scorpio season (one of the three water signs), due to its nautical themes, but that’s ok. Like ALL books in this series, it can be read at ANY time. 🙂
See also a retelling of this iconic tale from a woman’s perspective, in Sena Jeter Naslund’s Ahab’s Wife. |
|
The Plot (Bk. 1) (2021) |
KOR Bk. 1 | A dark academia-esque thriller (book 1 in a duology) all about the dangers of ill begotten celebrity/fame. Be careful what you wish for. See here.
For another dark academia read that’s perfect for Leo season, check out Donna Tartt’s The Goldfinch. |
|
Red, White & Royal Blue (2019) |
McQUI | Speaking of the Aquarius-Leo opposition, the author of this book, born January 21, 1991, is an Aquarius. In this novel she puts queer characters and a queer romance in the spotlight of U.S. politics and the British monarchy.
Check out the movie based on this book which was released during Leo season on August 11, 2023. 🙂 Unfortunately there doesn’t appear to be a DVD or Blu-ray version of the film which can be streamed via Amazon Prime. |

A little librarian confession: Sorry, y’all. It was a bit of a struggle to find contemporary nonfiction authors, poets, and playwrights born during Leo season. Alas. In lieu of that, I found many 20th and even 19th-century writers, two of whom had a love affair with mythology (namely Robert Graves and Edith Hamilton). Graves is known for his very poetic The White Goddess and Hamilton was a mid 20th-century expert on Greek mythology.

Dare to Lead: Brave Work, Tough Conversations, Whole Hearts (2018) |
658.4092 BRO | This self-help book is all about courageous leadership… a very Leo theme!
Also, check out the author’s aptly named podcast, Dare to Lead. How fiercely leonine…aka., perfect for Leo season! 🦁 |
|
Hidden Potential (2023) (another Leo writer, born on August 13, 1981) |
153.8 GRA | A pop-psychology book by a psychology professor about leadership skills and creative entrepreneurship…and, well, hidden potential. 🙂(I’ve gotta admit, the title pretty much says it all!)
See also his earlier title all about the power of thinking outside the box in entrepreneurship: Originals: How Non-Conformists Move the World. The title basically captures the essence of the Leo-Aquarius polarity. |
|
Madonna: A Rebel Life (2023) (While the author of Madonna’s bio. is not herself a Leo, Madonna certainly is: born on August 16, 1958). |
92 MAD | Enjoy this recent biography of world-renowned pop singer, Madonna, yet another Leo. (See her birth chart!)
Sadly, her birth time isn’t conclusive so her rising sign may not be accurate (potentially Virgo). Either way, she has her Sun and Venus in Leo. What’s especially striking is that the revolutionary planet associated with radical rebels – with or without a cause – AND the shock factor (Uranus) is also in Leo. The title of this biography really captures the Uranian (rebellious) qualities of Madonna’s public life and persona. |
|
A Promised Land (2020) (another Leo author, and politician, born on August 4, 1961) |
92 OBA | Dig into renowned former U.S. president and our first BIPOC president, Barack Obama’s memoir (both personal and political). He just so happens to be a Leo Sun with Aquarius rising (check out his birth chart).
Note: It wasn’t my intention to have the Leo-Aquarius polarity be a recurring theme in this post, but it seems to be the case…rather against my will. This post is taking on a life of its own. |
|
Scrappy Little Nobody (2016) (another Leo writer, born on August 9, 1985 in Portland, Maine!) |
92 KEN | Enjoy the memoir of a Maine actress and singer (born in Portland!) who just so happens to be a Leo. She’s been on Broadway and is also known in the film world for her role (the main character) in the 3-part musical series, Pitch Perfect. Drama ensues within an all-women collegiate a cappella group. |
|
Spare (2023) |
92 HAR | Prince Harry’s memoir that’s all about the darker aspects of the British monarchy and the impact of his mother Princess Diana’s death on him throughout childhood and beyond.
While Prince Harry is NOT a Leo and lacks prominent Leo placements in his birth chart, his wife, actress Meghan Markle, IS a Leo. A Leo actress married into British royalty. It’s almost too good to be true for Leo season. (See her chart here). Finally, check out this book about both Prince Harry and Meghan Markle:

Genre-specific
During Leo season, indulge in books in the following genres or based on the following themes:
- Books about acting and theater or performance art as Leos are nothing if not great actors on the world stage, or at least the stage of their lives.
- Books about celebrities and celebrity gossip.
- Books about entrepreneurship, a very Leo, dare I say, enterprise. 🙂
- Books about leadership and world leaders (especially of the fierce and indomitable variety).
- Books about royalty and the monarchy.
