FYI: It is currently late Sagittarius season (as of today – Tuesday, December 16, 2025), so you may be wondering why the Virgo post is coming to you now. It WAS up on the website months ago, but was somehow deleted. I am reposting it so the comprehensive series is available, especially for all you detail-oriented Virgos out there who may have wondered where the Virgo post was.
Keywords & Virgo in a Nutshell (including a bit of technical stuff)
Welcome to Virgo season! Virgo is a mutable earth sign (which makes them much more adaptable than the other earth sign we’ve explored thus far, Taurus), marking the transition from late summer to early autumn. Like Gemini, Virgo is ruled by Mercury, but is intellectual in a much more grounded, practical, and down-to-earth way. Unlike the immediately preceding sign, Leo, which likes to shine center stage, Virgos tend to operate behind the scenes and are often self-effacing and humble, sometimes to a fault.
They are very detail-oriented, methodical, and often perfectionistic which would make them fantastic editors. Unfortunately their incredibly high standards can be somewhat of a double-edged sword, leading to analysis paralysis and intense self-criticism even self-loathing. This criticism can be more outward facing which at times makes folks with strong Virgo placements difficult to be with. They always have feedback to offer and oftentimes this feedback is unsolicited.

Fun fact: That humorous GIF is from the fantastic 2019 Netflix original film, Wine Country, which stars Virgo Amy Poehler (see her birth chart), among others.
On the more positive side, Virgos always want to help people in very real and practical ways. Like editors, they make fantastic nurses or healthcare workers more broadly. It’s worth taking a look at the opposite sign, Pisces, which is arguably the most empathetic of all twelve zodiac signs or empathic in the deepest sense of the term. (FYI: this and what follows about the Virgo-Pisces polarity is my opinion, not fact). This intense Piscean empathy fuels the Virgoan need to be needed and to help the most vulnerable members of society. Virgos take the altruistic urge of Pisces and give it form, making it real, practical, and tangible in the here and now rather than in the abstract ethereal realm of the soul where Pisces tend to dwell. Virgos are the helpers of the zodiac and they aren’t doing it for self-aggrandizement like a Leo might. They do it out of a genuine desire to help others.
One final observation. What’s with Virgo being represented by the virgin? What does this mean? Hint…This may come as a surprise to you, but it’s not about sex, or abstinence from it. It’s rooted in a very ancient concept of Virgin which means whole unto oneself (a sovereign being). So, in a manner of speaking, Virgo is all about becoming whole and while needing to help others, not relying too heavily on society to define yourself. This is deeply empowering and harkens back to the ancient wisdom of the Oracle of Delphi/the Pythia: “Know yourself” and then, in true Virgo fashion, give it form…be yourself in the most profound sense of the term.

Were you born during Virgo season (August 22nd – September 21st)? If not, do you have other prominent Virgo placements, besides the Sun, in your chart? Take a look at your Moon, Ascendant/Rising Sign, and Ascendant Ruler (the planet ruling your rising sign). Perhaps you have Gemini rising, ruled by Mercury in its other happy place of Virgo. 🙂
Don’t know which planets rule which signs? Check out this chart (also captured below) which enumerates planetary rulerships, both ancient and modern:

Positive attributes:
- Conscientious
- Discerning
- Organized
Negative attributes (the shadow side of Virgo: a neurotic perfectionist who is so critical of self and others they are difficult to be around):
- Fussy
- High-strung
- Pedantic

6 Fiction Recommendations
| TITLE | Call No./# of Minerva copies | Why is this a Virgo read? |
| Code Name Hélène (2020) | LAW | This novel is all about a real-life WWII spy, socialite and journalist Nancy Wake, who was herself a Virgo (born on August 30, 1912).
As a Virgo she had the skills to memorize large quantities of data that could not be written down to the risk of this info. being compromised/exposed to the Nazis. Enjoy this thoroughly researched novel all about a highly-decorated Virgo war heroine. 🙂 |
| The Dictionary of Lost Words (2021) | WIL | Fun Fact: We will be reading and discussing this title during the Spring 2026 MML Readers’ Circle on the topic of “Libraries in Literature & Books About Books: How Meta!” Date and time, TBD. Stay tuned!
A book about a young woman dedicated to compiling a dictionary of words used by women and associated with women that the men behind the Oxford English Dictionary (OED), including her father, omitted. This novel reclaims women’s voices and women’s history through the power of language. How very Virgo! For more about the fascinating history of the (OED), consider pairing this novel with this nonfiction account of the dictionary’s inception by Simon Winchester. |
| The Hobbit, or, There and Back Again (1937, 1997 ed.)
Tolkien, J.R.R. (with illustrations by Alan Lee) |
TOL | A fantastic classic for Virgo season featuring the unlikely adventure story of one Bilbo Baggins, great uncle of LOTR’s Frodo.
Fun fact: It’s worth noting that according to Tolkien lore, Bilbo and Frodo share a birthday: September 22nd. This date is right on the cusp between Virgo and Libra, and I would argue, these characters have qualities of both signs. Yet another fun fact: The Hobbit was published during late Virgo season on September 21, 1937 and the author, while not a Virgo, may have had Virgo on the ascendant (if his birth chart is accurate, which is questionable). Regardless, I definitely see Virgo qualities in his writing which is dense, wordy, and he even created his own two languages (Elvish: Quenya & Sindarin). Tolkien, in addition to being a writer, was a philologist, both very Virgoan professions! 🙂 If you really want to go down the rabbit hole, watch The Hobbit film trilogy. (Just note, it has very mixed reviews). |
| Piranesi (2020) | CLA | A fantastic read for Virgo season for folks with a healthy dose of curiosity and a love of stylistically complex literature. Virgos have a strong attention to detail and generally enjoy this kind of writing. 🙂
This book is set in a labyrinthine dreamlike house and involves a mysterious research project which reveals evidence of an alternate universe. Perfect for fans of literary fantasy novels with delightfully convoluted storylines. |
| Special Topics in Calamity Physics (2006) | 25+ Minerva copies | A delightfully eccentric and award-winning coming of age novel. (This also falls under the category of dark academia).
This book covers the life of Blue and her father, a quirky academic. The novel takes a dark turn when one of the students at the elite North Carolina private school Blue attends drowns and Blue immerses herself in the mystery. She is full of obscure cultural references and aphorisms. How very Virgoan of her (and her academic father). Blue is extremely witty, clever, and full of scientific, philosophical, and political trivia, hence the title: Special Topics in Calamity Physics. |
| The Women (2024) | HAN | A recent bestseller by a popular author of historical fiction centralizing women’s voices and perspectives. This book is about nurses caring for soldiers overseas during the tumultuous era of the Vietnam War. It could be argued that nursing is a very Virgo profession.
Also available in Spanish translation (en español)! If you want to know more about our new foreign language fiction collection in French, Portuguese, and Spanish, check out this blog post. For a nonfiction book about the very Virgoan vocation of nursing, check out this (2015) book by journalist, Alexandra Robbins. |

| TITLE | Call No./# of Minerva copies | Why is this a Virgo read? |
| Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth I: The Mother and Daughter Who Forever Changed British History (2023)
|
10+ Minerva copies |
While Anne Boleyn was a Taurus (born in early May) her daughter, Elizabeth I also known as the “Virgin Queen” (she remained unmarried and was a powerful woman in her own right). She was also a Virgo, born on September 7, 1533. (See their respective birth charts: Anne Boleyn – note the date of birth is uncertain– and Elizabeth I).
Archetypally, the mythological exploration of mother-daughter relationships is perfect for Virgo season (captured in the lore surrounding Greek goddess Demeter and Persephone). As a humorous and personal aside, the article I linked to about this mother-daughter myth was posted on my late mother’s birthday (and my mom was a Virgo). 🙂 For a recent example of fiction inspired by the Demeter-Persephone myth, check out this book by author, Rachel Lyon (born in April so a Taurus, but according to her birth chart, depending on the time of day, she may have had her Moon in Virgo). Pair this with this biographical account of Elizabeth I’s life and reign, by Alison Weir (MML does have this book!). 🙂 |
| The Perfectionist’s Guide to Losing Control: A Path to Peace and Power (2023) | 6 Minerva copies | The perfect self help book for Virgos who are notorious for being highly perfectionistic. Virgos love to be in control of all the moving parts of their lives and this book may help you learn how to surrender to the greater forces at play (God, Source, Fate…whatever/whoever you want to call it). This book works with the Virgo-Pisces polarity and may help folks with heavy Virgo placements draw on the wisdom of Pisces…to let go and just go with the flow.
For more on going with the flow, check out this iconic book on flow states by the late Hungarian-American psychologist, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. He wasn’t a Virgo and we don’t know his birth time (so he may or may not have been Virgo rising), BUT on the day he was born in September of 1934 Neptune (modern ruler of Pisces) was in Virgo. Somehow this seems fitting. He nailed down in Virgo fashion the very slippery Piscean concept of the flow state. 🙂 |
| Stolen Focus: Why You Can’t Pay Attention — and How to Think Deeply Again (2022) | 153.733 HAR | Virgos tend to have laser focus, but also a capacity to multitask due to the mutable nature of the sign. Do you need to call on this Virgo energy of reclaiming your focus? If so, enjoy this book.
For a similar book tackling the topic of focus and attention span, check out this earlier title by Daniel Goleman. Or explore the attention economy from a more Piscean perspective with this (2019) book by artist and writer, Jenny Odell. |
| Visual Thinking: The Hidden Gifts of People Who Think in Pictures, Patterns, and Abstractions (2022)
Grandin, Temple, Ph.D. with Betsy Lerner (Grandin is another Virgo writer, born on August 29, 1947) |
152.14 GRA | This book offers a window into the pattern-seeking mind of neurodivergent (specifically autistic) individuals like the author herself, Temple Grandin. Check out Grandin’s birth chart: there’s a lot of Virgo energy there (Sun, Mercury – in its home sign no less, and Venus).
For more on neurodiversity, check out my July 2023 blog post all about this topic. While I would never reduce autism or any other form of neurodivergence to a specific astrological archetype, there is something about the attention to detail and patterns that other folks tend not to see that autistic individuals (myself included) share with the sign of Virgo. Check out this biopic (2010 film about Grandin’s life) starring Claire Danes. (It’s worth noting, the actress is NOT herself autistic). |
| What’s Your Pronoun?: Beyond He & She (2020)
Baron, Dennis, Ph.D. |
425.55 BAR | Virgos are known for using very precise language which is why I chose to include a book about linguistics as it affects day-to-day life in this zodiacally-themed list. 🙂
If you’re curious to learn more about this book before diving in headfirst, check out this thoughtful review by a librarian. |
| Yes, Please (2014)
(a Virgo writer, comedian, and actress born on September 16, 1971) |
92 POE | Yes, Virgos can be funny. 🙂 Another Virgo comedian is Melissa McCarthy (born August 26, 1970).
Dive into Poehler’s, of SNL (2001-2008/seasons 23-29) & Parks and Rec. fame, hilarious memoir. Dive into her birth chart. She has a Virgo stellium (Sun, Mercury, Venus, and Pluto) all in the 8th house associated with death and, of course, taxes. Without diving too deep into the murky waters of the 8th house, let’s just say it lends her a rather dark sense of humor (Pluto, which has similar associations, intensifies all of this). |
Genre-Specific
For Virgo season READ ALL THE BOOKS, since this is such an intellectual sign. Just kidding, or am I?

Fun fact: That second GIF features the hilarious Jimmy Fallon, yet another Virgo! He was born on September 19, 1974. Alas, his birth time is unknown, so we don’t know if he has his rising sign in Virgo alongside the Sun and Venus. (I’d guess not, but you never know!) Check out his partial birth chart. One astrologer has rectified his birth time (learn more about rectification…it’s hard core!) and according to them he may have been born as a Pisces rising with Jupiter in Pisces in the 1st house. Well…he sure is jovial (a.k.a. Jupiterian). 🙂
- As a Mercury-ruled sign Virgo is very intellectual, but in a much more practical and down-to-earth way then the fellow Mercury-ruled sign, Gemini. During this time of year, dig into nonfiction about grounded Virgoan topics like health and wellness (both physical health/fitness AND mental health). Another dimension of this Mercury-ruled sign is its emphasis on cultivating practical organization skills and time management (i.e.: project management), among other things.
- Back to school time…Read books set in colleges and universities, if you like a darker quality to this literature, dig into the world of dark academia (dark academia booklist here).
- Given the Demeter-Persephone myth’s association with Virgo, one could argue that Virgo season marks a rite of passage into adulthood especially for women and femmes. For this reason, coming-of-age novels would be perfect for Virgo season.
- Virgos love to compartmentalize and are information seekers, so books about developing critical thinking skills and information literacy (a term very much associated with the library world) would be ideal for this time of year.
- Virgos tend to be problem solvers so mystery novels (or really ANY novels) with complex plot lines would be perfect to read this time of year.
