Film Screening: “True Grit”

Join us for a film screening and discussion with our movie group: the Merrill Film Society.

Joel and Ethan Coen’s coming-of-age Western from 2010 is an adaptation of a novel (by Charles Portis) and perhaps their best contribution to a genre. Unlike earlier Coen brothers movies, this movie adheres more closely to the tropes of the Western (and the original novel) than it does to the Coens’ storytelling style. Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, Josh Brolin, and a young Hailee Steinfeld gave dynamite performances and were a driving force behind the film’s box office success and its 10 Oscar nominations (including acting noms for Bridges and Steinfeld). Regardless of genre, if you love movies you owe it to yourself to see True Grit.
