Unearthing Our Origins

June 29 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Dig into our collective human history with Dr. Becca Peixotto as she shares stories about excavating an ancient human relative, Homo naledi. Journey deep underground in the cave in South Africa where the 250,000 fossils were found and follow the bones through their next chapters where they raise as many questions as they answer about our origins as humans.

Free and open to all.

Becca Peixotto is an archaeologist who lives in Yarmouth and works with an agency tasked with finding missing service personnel from World War II and other past conflicts. Her other archaeological research includes sloshing through the Great Dismal Swamp (VA and NC) to study 18th and 19th century resistance communities, digging up cornfields in Maryland to find Middle and Late Woodland period villages, and crawling through a cave in South Africa to excavate ancient hominid fossils. She holds MAs from Universiteit van Amsterdam and American University (DC), and a PhD from American University. Becca is a former Outward Bound instructor (out west, not at Hurricane Island), and is active with the Yarmouth Community Garden and with efforts to support women in science.
